Social Studies

Purpose
In the Lutheran elementary school all training and instruction must be Christ-centered. In our social studies curriculum we endeavor to equip the citizen of god’s kingdom for citizenship in the kingdom of this earth. To this end our instruction will emphasize God as Creator, Preserver, Redeemer, and Ruler of all people. We confess that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” Genesis 1:1, that God “rules forever by his power” (Psalm 66:7), and that God “placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything in every way” (Ephesians 1:22).

Objectives
We endeavor to have the child develop the following:

A. Knowledge
            1. That God as creator, ruler, preserver, and Savior has created the world and
directs any surface changes to reveal his glory.
2. That God as creator, ruler, preserver, and Savior directs the activities of
individuals and nations to reveal his glory.
3. That individuals, families, communities, states, and countries are interdependent.
4. That the historical past continually plays a role n shaping current and future
     events.
5. That environment affects the way people live.
6. That conservation of human and cultural resources, as well as the conservation
and recycling of natural resources, is required by God as faithful stewardship and
also is necessary for the survival and benefit of all mankind.
7. That God has instituted the governments and the laws and freedoms under
     which people live.

B. Attitudes
            1. An appreciation of the manner on which God has established the geographical
arrangements of the world and continues to reveal his almighty hand in the

                 love for all mankind.

                 by citizens in a democracy.

C. Conducts, Habits, and Skills
            1. The ability to recognize God’s law as the unchanging guide in all aspects of our
lives, as opposed to the changing values of sinful man as influenced by the
devil, the world, and our flesh.
            2. The ability to work with others in the solution of common problems.
            3. The ability to use social studies tools (maps, globes, graphs, reference books,
