Reading
Purpose
That children master the skills necessary for enjoying success and independence in reading.
Goals
1. Develop skills in listening, speaking, comprehension, and language study that relate
reading to the other language arts.
2. Use reading as a source of ideas and models for creative written expression.
Objectives
1. To develop comprehension skills—getting meaning from words, sentences, and
paragraphs.
2. To teach decoding skills—using a logical strategy that combines phonics, context and
structural skills—for early, confident word identification.
3. To develop vocabulary—introducing, reinforcing, expanding, and enriching the
word-meaning skills that enhance comprehension.
4. To develop study skills—using reading as a means of learning- reference and dictionary
skills, study habits, and techniques in content area reading.
5. To develop literature appreciation—building the skills and understandings for a lifetime
of reading pleasure.
