EASTSIDE LUTHERAN SCHOOL
CURRICULUM GUIDE
Physical Education
Need for a Program of Physical Education
We, as Christian educators, feel the great need for an organized physical education program in order to develop the God-given physical gifts with which the children are blessed. It is extremely important to us that the children realize that their bodies are “temples of the Holy Spirit,” and that they are to glorify God in that body as well as in spirit. St. Paul writes in I Corinthians 6:19,20, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
Physical education is important in many ways to children; one of these ways is health. Physical conditioning creates better health for a person. The child with good health is happier, better adjusted socially, and able to do better work in school than a child whose health is poor. Health therefore, is not primarily an end in itself but a means to more effective living. The Lutheran elementary school has a large responsibility for fostering the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of children. This it can best do with a proper program of physical education.
Physical education is an integral part of the Lutheran elementary school curriculum rather than merely a series of exercise periods; it contributes to many of the most important objectives of education in a democratic society. Children need an enormous amount of exercise, respiration, and other body functions which should be kept us during life.
Children’s normal social development requires opportunities for developing recreational interests and skills and for learning to play with others, to choose and respect leaders, and to follow the rules of the game. The potential values of a good physical education program for personality development and effective living should not be overlooked; there is no better way to establish easy and companionable human relations, develop friendships, and learn how to be both a good leader and a good follower than through a modern program of physical education.
Bodily exercise is needed for our growth and health. It is a means for keeping our body and soul together. School work may be improved if the child is given a period of physical education where he/she may be active. A good physical education program will equip the child physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and morally. A well organized program in our schools will provide good recreation and worthy exercise. The Lord has equipped us with sound bodies and sound minds. Therefore, should we not take care of the “temple of the Holy Spirit?”
