Purpose
The children should recognize that the number system is s a gift of God and should be used to His glory through an appreciation of the meaning, use, and value of numbers in life, and a growing understanding of ways in which numbers can be used in the service of God.
Objectives
To help children be successful in these important skill areas:
1. Problem Solving—Children solve problems using their knowledge of basic facts to
answer mathematical questions.
2. Real-Life Application—Children solve story problems that deal with real-life
situations.
3. Reasonableness of Results—children check to determine whether or not an
answer is reasonable.
4. Estimation and Approximation—Children estimate in order to obtain rapid
answers.
5. Computation Skills—Children gain skill in basic operations using whole numbers.
They also learn basic information that will help them perform operations using
decimals, common fractions, integers, ratio, proportions, and percent in the
upper grades.
6. Geometry—Children learn the basic terms and properties of geometric figures.
7. Measurement—Children measure distance, weight, time, capacity, and
temperature in metric and customary systems.
8. Charts and Graphs—Children read and draw conclusions from charts and graphs
9. Prediction—Children learn to use mathematics to predict the outcomes of events
in patterns.
10. Computer Literacy—Children learn applications of the calculator and computer
through supplementary activities.
