People's Bible Teschings - Christ

Who is Jesus Christ? When you say the Apostles' Creed, you confess that Jesus Christ is both true God and true man. But what does that mean? People who said this creed 1700 years ago still disagreed on who Jesus was. Many ideas were proposed, and the dispute among church leaders became quite bitter. Eventually, Emperor Constantine called a church conference of all the Greek-speaking bishops to decide what was correct. It took two conferences several decades apart to produce the Nicene Creed, which defines in more detail who Jesus Christ is.

For several reasons, the Nicene Creed did not end all heresies. Not all churches use the Nicene Creed, so the members in such churches may never have considered the teachings of the creed. Even in churches that do use it, the Nicene Creed often is not explained in detail to the members. There are new and old heresies not dealt with by the Nicene Creed, and there is an effort by some to restate their heresies to make them acceptable under the creed.

A correct understanding of Jesus Christ is essential to having a saving faith. A Christ who is not the Christ of the Bible cannot save anyone from God's wrath. To understand what the Bible teaches and what it doesn't teach about Christ takes sutdy. Eastside will offer a Bible class to examine the correct and incorrect teachings about Christ. The class will run for 5 weeks beginning on Sunday, September 12th. It will be held between 6:30 and 8:00pm and taught by Dr. Arthur Eggert.

The textbook for this course is called Christ and is part of the People's Bible Teachings series produced by Northwestern Publishing House (NPH). This is series of books talks about the teachings of the church in greater detail than is covered in basic doctrine classes or confirmation instruction, but not at the level the seminary teaches. The books can help lay members gain a better grasp of what the terms and doctrines of the Bible really mean and how they should be applied in the life of a Christian. The cost of Christ is $16.00. A signup sheet for the course, so that materials can be ordered and prepared is in the entryway of the church.
