12 Ways to Help Your Child in His/Her Christian Training
1) Have a BIBLE at home and use it.
2) Often read and discuss the Bible lesson your child is having at school using the Bible.
3) Find the passage your child is studying in the Bible and help him memorize it. But be patient. Each child memorizes at a different rate and in different ways.
4) Procedures for learning memory work—review the meaning of the portion first. Then learn it exactly a phrase at a time and connect it to what has already been learned until all is memorized. Accuracy is important since we are dealing with God’s Word. Additional Hints for Memory Work
a. Prompt with a question or thought at the start, if necessary, rather than give the
beginning words.
b. For those who have trouble, have them practice while walking, using motion, or any
routine habit.
c. Write the portion, leaving blanks for the child to fill. Repeat leaving more and more
blanks until the child can write it completely.
d. Write the portion entirely and then erase words or phrases until the child can recite the
whole portion.
5) Encourage your child to pray. Teach them to use their own words, not always memorized form
prayers. Help them learn to talk with God.
6) Be a Christian example in your life in word and in action. Attend church with them regularly.
7) After a church service, discuss the sermon with your child. Try to stress at least one thought or
idea.
8) Help your child to be involved in active worship. Be an example. Sing the hymns and liturgy.
Help her find the page in the hymnal, even the little ones.
9) Sing religious songs at home, on trips, etc.
10) Let Christ be a part of your every day life. Don’t shy away from talking about Him with your
child. Share Him!
11) In guiding your child’s Christian life, provide sound Christian literature, music, and
entertainment. Be careful of the TV shows they see.
12) Be an example in participating in the work of our congregation. Enthusiasm is contagious!
